National Novel Writing Month: A Meme

"The scariest moment is always just before you start". —- Stephen King

The questions/meme are a reblog from clarisaxx.tumblr.com, but the answers are all my own...

Working Title [of NaNoWrimo work for the current season]:
Novel 1: The Tale of Snow White and Rose Red
Novel 2: The Angry Gondals stuff
Novel 3: And the Rest (including Sibs of Doom and Gollumidas stuff)

Genre:
All over the map, but I'm guessing fantastical epic stuff

Projected Word Count:
It would be great if I could get one of them to 50k.  My modest expectation is that all combined will be at least hit 50k.

AT THE START DO YOU:

Start typing?
Sure. The deadline is 11:59pm each night to review, word count and repeat.

Have an outline?
Yes for the first two, not so much for the third.

Scene-by-scene?
Kinda.

Know how it starts?
Yep.

Know how it ends? (Does it have an ending?)
Novel 1: Yes
Novel 2: Sorta
Novel 3: No, bloody clue-I'll go where the story takes me.

Have your climax in order?
Possibly.

Have your main characters yet?
Yes.

Plan to draw on your experiences?
Maybe. There are very few life experiences that are unique so I'm sure if it didn't happen to me, it happened to someone.

IS YOUR WORK GOING TO BE:

Funny?
I usually infuse some kind of funny in anything fictional that I write. Your Mileage May Vary as to how funny it is.

Serious?
Oh yeah.  I do 'Serious' pretty well.

Sad?
Oh yeah.  There will be tragedy.  It wouldn't be me if there wasn't some kind of tragedy.

Semi-Autobiographical?
Not really, although Your Mileage May Vary there too in reading some incidents.

Based on another story?
Novel 2: Yes. It's my reimagining of the Angria and Gondal tales.

HOW MUCH HAVE YOU PLANNED?
HAVE YOU USED:

A paper journal?
Yep.  A lot of material was/is documented in those pretty journals that Barnes and Noble and the now defunct Borders used to sell. My herculean task has been to digitized all of it.

A computer?
Some.

Index cards?
Yep, in ways that would make the teachers that I frustrated because I wouldn't use them and complete term papers go "What The?".

Bulleted lists?
Sometimes on the index cards.

Plot Charts?
On the larger index cards-leftover practice from storyboarding for film.

Character Charts?
Yes and no.  I like to keep names + traits + appearances listed, which makes things easier to keep track of, but I know them in my head and so I'll rarely update them.

ODDS AND ENDS:

Favorite writing resource?
Book:
On Writing by Stephen King
The Elements of Style by Strunk and White
The prefaces of the short stories written by Marion Zimmer Bradley in her Sword and Sorceress anthologies
How to Become a Famous Writer Before your Dead by Ariel Gore

Online:
The Marion Zimmer Bradley Literary Works Trust (http://www.mzbworks.com/)

The tweets from @lawnrocket (twitter.com/lawnrocket)
NaNo for the New and the Insane A guide to surviving NaNoWriMo(SM) By Lazette Gifford (http://lazette.net/freestuf/NaNoBook.pdf)

A line you would like to use:
"Cleaving through the night sky" - I came up with it but I don't know where I'll use it yet.

A scene you would like to include:
Possibly the one where one character sleeps with the other but was leading him on to find out what side of the fight he was on and he doesn't see it coming because she pretty much doesn't seem to be cutthroat.

A concept you would like to explore:
Novel 1: The compromises we make
Novel 2: Personal Evolution
Novel 3: Oh the places that we go

A cliché you would like to avoid:
While I'd like to avoid as many as possible (tvtropes.org holla!), I don't think it's possible to avoid even one.  You basically find a way to make them less hackneyed.

A character you would like to use:
I can't really think of one that's not my own.

FORWARD THINKING:

Do you expect to be able to complete it?
I'd like to, but realistically I may not.  It doesn't mean I can't try.

Do you intend to complete it?
I'll do my level best.

Would you ever try to publish it?
I'd like to try publishing one of the three.  That would be kinda cool.

What do you expect to get out this month of frantic writing?
Some really ripping yarns that I would like to read on my own and to share with others.

I am thinking about Scrubs

I am thinking about Scrubs
From the info tab:
Scrubs are the shirts and trousers or gowns worn by nurses, surgeons, and other operating room personnel when “scrubbing in” for surgery. They are designed to be simple with minimal places for dirt to hide, easy to launder, and cheap to replace if damaged or stained irreparably. The wearing of scrubs has been extended outside of surgery in many hospitals.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and March Madness Sunday

I am watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
“Kinda. Watching it, Tupac and Biggie and the NCAA games while cooking.”
169 others are also watching Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire on GetGlue.com
I’m definitely late to the bandwagon when it comes to the Harry Potter movies.  I have only ever seen the 1st movie in theaters.  I bought the final book on the strentgh of reading someone else’s copy of the book before it.
While I imagine this movie would have been amazing to seen on the large screen.  The only parts that capture my interest are the ball, the flashbacks, the Cedric-Harry moments and the heartwrenching scene when Cedric’s father keens over his son’s dead body.
I was cooking while this was going on.  Sundays are usually when I make things like stews and beans.  I made beans and cornbread.
The Tupac/Biggie documentary was interesting enough.  Rather than focusing on how both men died only, it delves into who they were.
March Madness is in full swing. Right now the teams competing are ones that I’m not as engaged in. I check in now and again to see the scores.
I imagine that ABC Family, which aired this movie, decided that it was an appropriate one for March Madness, being that it is about competition.

Small random stuff or NaBloPoMo Day Five

[Cross posting from the NaBloPoMo blog: My Blog http://ladydayelle.wordpress.com/]

#nowplayingwhileblogging: Camera One - Josh Joplin Group

So...

-Andy Rooney, journalist and essayist, best known for his curmudgeonly, but wry observations on the long runner, "60 Minutes" died yesterday. The clips remind us what a great loss his unique perspective was. It was funny that they aired the segment where he was adamant about not taming his eyebrows. I observed when I saw it earlier in the day that they reminded me of the Grinch's eyebrows. When puzzling why they were airing "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" on now, just a few days after Halloween on ABC Family tonight, I did put forth that they may have been airing it as a tribute to our favorite kindly Grinch on "60 Minutes," Andy Rooney. Me just supposin again...

-Extremely tired and feverish so I've done minimal writing and blogging and lots of listening to music. I add to my eMusic stores some songs I thought about, but had not tried to find such as the song listed above. I also added titles like God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, Johnny and Mary by Robert Palmer, I Didn't Mean to Turn You On-both the Robert Palmer and the original Cherrelle versions, Still In Love by Troop, When the Rose Is Sown by Big Country, and Do You Wanna Get Funky by C+C Music Factory.

-I actually livetweeted "How The Grinch Stole Christmas" under the hashtag #howthegrinchstolexmas and part of The Wizard of Oz under #wizardofoz. The loudest laughes in the household came from me observing that the scenes in Munchkinland played as if it was Law and Order: Special Witches Unit and my pointing out the "Bawstin accented" words of Ray Bolger (Scarecrow-grew up in Dorchester) and Jack Haley (Tin Man-grew up in Boston, possibly Southie). With the references to Law and Order, it would make my day if when I continue livetweeting tomorrow I find a clever way to link Chris Meloni (Law and Order SVU) and Kathryn Erbe (Law and Order Criminal Intent) to the Wizard of Oz since they were both involved in Oz at some point.

Oh priorities...

Never forget:

"There is never enough time to do or say all the things that we would wish. The thing is to try to do as much as you can in the time that you have. Remember Scrooge, time is short, and suddenly, you're not here any more." -The Ghost of Christmas

Random Moments of Funny on TV - to me

Frasier: There are many, but the Marty and Ronnie wedding takes the cake. No air conditioning, manure delivery, Daphne's brothers (played by Anthony LaPaglia, who totally must have enjoyed a break from being the deadly serious Agent Jack Malone on Without a Trace, Robbie Coltrane, and Richard E. Grant) getting the flower girl drunk, Daphne giving birth in the vet's office - yeah.

GI Joe Renegades: There is really only one episode - the one where Duke gets thrown in the big house and Scarlett after failing to infiltrate in the ways that you'd think would be successfully ends up having to go undercover as a redneck/white trash pregnant stereotype let loose from the Maury Show or Jerry Springer.  If that was not funny enough, once they get into the truck and beat it out of Dodge, Duke looks at Scarlett, who is still wearing her disguise and asks how long he's been inside.

My Wife and Kids: Michael's battle with the mouse.  This was over the top stupid.  From the profiling to the Rambo night ops mission to Michael actually believing that the mouse orchestrating the cat's assassination by their oldest daughter. Of course the point is made during this homage to the movie "Mouse Hunt" that if he had just had a professional take care of the mouse, it would have saved a lot of trouble (but there wouldn't have been a story).

Whose Line Is It Anyway: So, so many, but one of the favorites has to be Colin's "monkey, monkey chew the butter" weird jump rope chant for the 'Scenes from a Hat' segment.  More of a "What The?" moment.

Star Trek: TNG: Anything that has Data's demon cat Spot.  Apparently Data is clueless that his cat is descended from the same cat that showed up on Friends (one of the where Rachel spends $1000 on a cat that totally hates her) and the cat on the short lived series Committed where one the characters tells the other that she had brought evil within the house.  "Capt. Picard Day" - just the concept and Picard's reaction to it was hilarious.

The Law and Order franchise: Not a lot of funny moments for this show.  A lot of them are "What The?" moments or mildly funny moments.  Two were perpetrated by Logan-one on Prime where he stops a fleeing suspect with a garbage can lid a la Tom and Jerry.  The other was on Criminal Intent, where only he could start this huge mob fight between the police and the firefighters.  The fight opens the episode with poor Wheeler on the ground calling for backup/help. Then we see how they got there and you understand why Ross probably had a bottle of Maalox in the drawer all the time.

Briscoe taking pleasure in taunting Munch about sleeping with Munch's ex-wife every chance he got especially during a stakeot in a cemetary was just....funny and wrong.

Motivation

Motivation is a funny thing.  It's amazing that a person can be motivated to travel great distances to do the thing that's fun, but not the thing that they ought to do.

This is because the things that we ought to do routinely and diligently are usually NOT FUN.

Picking up your clothes, paying bills, cleaning the kitchen, putting together a shopping list - NOT FUN.

Watching movies you haven't seen in a while, doing tons of shots the night before you have to show up for another mindnumbing day of work, recreational sex - FUN

Unfortunately, when we are motivated to do the FUN things instead of the NOT FUN things and not do the NOT FUN things at all, bad things usually happen.

Being a responsible adult means you dig down and find the motivation to do the NOT FUN things because they need to be DONE.

Soundtrack of the day

On Twitter, I decided unconsciously to tweet the song that played in my head at the moment. Selections have included "Jacob's Ladder," the "theme from the first season of Pokemon," and "Atomic Dog."

It's amazing what songs will waft through your head at odd moments. I get some interesting responses, since my tweets are also displayed on Facebook.

MONDAY

Poor Monday-it gets such a bad rap as a day. This has to be a recent thing because I can't imagine that people in the past felt the same way.

Soaps:
A lot of "WTF" from me lately. Some people will blame the directions the storylines have taken on the scabs that wrote during the Writer's Strike. I don't let the regular writers off that easy. Many, except for The Young and the Restless, were going south for a long time now-most notably The Bold and the Beautiful.

Whenever I watch Guiding Light (GL), I find myself saying "Genug already!"
-I am happy that they finally wrapped up the Sarah/Jonathan/Lizzie storyline, but I hate how they ended it. I'll allow that Alan Spaulding is powerful, but I still can't see Lizzie and Jonathan not being about to find a legal remedy to keep him out of their lives, like a restraining order or something. The courts recognize very few grandparents' rights and honestly their wacky plan to get married would not have really stopped him.

-I wish they would end the Marina/Harley/Cyrus thing. I wish Marina would just bring both Harley and Cyrus into the same room and go,
"I know you guys are knocking each other and since you both couldn't grow a pair and tell me, I am telling you that I know. I am also taking myself out of this equation. Have fun together and go with god."
If wishes could come true that a soap heroine would just do that and strike a blow for intelligent women everywhere. Granted, never crazy about Marina or Cyrus, but I would love Marina to show that she has some pride rather than these silly "I Know What you Did" games she's been playing with Harley and Cyrus.
On a related note: I know that Rick Bauer needs to leave Harley alone. Rick "I'm in love with my wife until another damsel in distress comes along" has no right to threaten Harley, although he's right to call her by her right name.

-I also wish they would knock off the "Will they? Won't they" thing with Josh and Reva. Definitely a "genug" situation. I say just put Reva and Josh back together and call it a day. The Cassie/Josh thing never really jelled for me and honestly, while we are on the topic of self-respect: you would think that Cassie would invest in a clue in that she has honestly been sleeping with 3-4 people in the same marital bed (the fourth being Tammy or Will depending upon the moment) and that's not a marriage. Cassie too should cut her losses and find a life somewhere else.

-The OMEN/BAD SEED '08
Clearly in addition to returning to some of the visual elements that made up GL's, they are returning to plot elements of the past. The bad seed idea was explored way back in the 50s and 60s with Meta Bauer's stepdaughter Kathy and her daughter Robin (admittedly Kathy was more of a rebel and felt unloved a la Lizzie Spaulding a few years ago vs. Robin whose actions were completely more bad seed). At times it's been amusing and at times ludicrous (Friday's episode where Will pays a guy to give him a ride was ... well, gee I wonder what that says about adults in general.) I honestly now don't understand why this kid has just not been put away. Yeah, Cassie stands in the way of such things but O'Neill as DA could take care of that. Court mandated mediation....I know there was a hearing and I can't fathom that a good judge in the face of the evidence would look the other way. I almost wish Beth would press charges against Will for what he did to James. (Granted all this is soaps so logic does not apply). This one needs to be laid to rest, even if it ends with Cassie riding off into the sunset with him to whatever special school he gets committed to (thus clearing the way for a Josh and Reva reunion). It was interesting at first but now it's becomes a lot of "are you kidding me?" Rafe gets busted for breathing and Will sits back and enjoys his life of making people miserable.

Except for the fact that I hated hearing that down the pike Phyllis and Nick are supposed to have marital problems because of Adam on young and the Restless, I've got nothing else except that while I was not pleased that Patrick is the father of Robin's baby, I am glad that she told him and that she is not looking to take him back. Of course GH will insist on not putting Robin and Jason back together...

Politics:
Another "genug already" situation. Granted last week's SNL take off on the "3am" ad was great, but honestly I feel that Lord Howard Dean should have the election "do-over," which includes placing Obama et. al on the ballot this time. A move that brings risks to either candidate, but I feel that both can stand up to it.

Other Stuff:
Still working on organizing meetups. I will sort this out by the end of the week.

The April Update

Wow.

I have not posted anything since my birthday.

I have not been idle. In fact, I have been quite busy. So busy in fact that lately I have grumbled about not having the time to do things like post to a blog.

I am currently in the midst of several things:

A) I am a seeking another job.
The job that I am currently working at is not working out. I gave it the "college try" and found the cons far outweighing any pros I could come up with for staying. While you can't run from every situation, you should recognize when something is not working out and that it is time to call it a day. I have been looking for sometime and unfortunately the deadline I set is coming sooner than I'd want it to. There is lots of advice and lots of jobs that if I lived in a different state I could take. I believe that I will find something suitable.

B) Writing.
I met someone in the middle of last year that reminded me why I enjoyed writing. I had essentially turned my back on it. Slowly but surely I have regained my interest and am working on some material. I did participate in National Novel Writing Month, though I did not get as far as I wanted. I was reminded of author David McCullough's observation that "writing requires discipline." My discipline in this area is slowly but surely getting there. I hope to begin collecting my 'ding' letters soon.

C) Relaunching the Weblogger meetup.
I realized that I needed to "pick a direction and go" rather than soliciting and soliciting for feedback as to what the Blogger meetup should be. I hope to relaunch it in June with a focus on writing and blogging. I have also taken the time to educate myself on some of the topics in blogging that I am not as familiar with.

I still volunteer some though there were other things such as chorus that I dropped because I realized that it was time to move on. Unfortunately, I won't be able to go on the two upcoming trips to NOLA offered through Boston Cares. I hope to go in November again.

I still visit interesting and cool blogs and websites and will reinstitute the Monthly regular feature again highlighting those blogs and websites I find interesting and think that you will too very soon.

On an unrelated note, I feel sad for the families that lost someone at the Virginia Tech shootings. There is no explaination for such things. As Wordworth said, "we must find strength in what remains behind."

Human Nature

I was waiting in the rain for the bus to come and cursing myself for being too lazy to walk. Behind me, I heard some kids. They made the usual row that kids make. I usually don't mind it. It sounded different though.

When I turned around, I saw that the kids were throwing shoes and trash at a homelsess man. They were having a great ole time doing it. The man had been sleeping for sometime on the bench (at least he was a sleep when I came up near the shed where one waits for the bus). He got up but did not react to the kids. He stared off into space, a bit as if he was used to being treated this way.

Feeling all of a sudden about 20 years older than I am, I turned around and in what I like to call "the Voice" told the kids to stop what they are doing and to leave the man alone. They stopped immediately and moved on their way, probably cursing me. These kids were about 15 or so. There was no guarantee that they would have responded to 'the Voice." They did. The man just turned over and as my bus came down the street, life seemed to go on as usual.
