March Madness 2006 part 2

March 17

The story thus far...

George Mason 65, North Carolina 60

-George Mason University (apparently named after a founding father we don't hear much about) took out last year's winner. They are on fire. Back to the drawing board for Roy and the boys..

Atlanta Region

Coming up...
-Arizona and Wisconsin.
Arizona pulled out early and never allowed the Badgers to overtake them, which is the way the Wildcats need to play, if not all of the time, most of the time.

On March 18, the meet "Villainova"-admittedly a good club this year. I admit a certain bias against since they cost Patrick Ewing and his 1985 Georgetowm Hoyas the chance to repeat as NCAA champions.

Again, in this "milk bowl" (both teams are known as the Wildcats) patrolling the boards, hitting the free throws and outlasting will be key.

-Iowa has been on fire lately. It will be interesting to see if they will be the "Gonzaga" this year-the team that goes farther than anyone expected and that shakes the bracket up a lot before they exit.

-Memphis has also been on fire-hence the No. 1 seeding. It may be discriminatory of me but I really don't want a school named after Oral Roberts to make it to the Final Four.

-The Salukis (Southern Illinois and West Virginia are back. Don't know if Pittsnoggle is but if he is, expect to see and hear his name in every commercial and comment.

Yet to play:
(11) San Diego St. 24-8 vs (6) Indiana 18-11

(13) Air Force 24-6 vs (4) Illinois 25-6

(16) Southern 19-12 vs (1) Duke 30-3

(12) Texas A&M 21-8 vs (5) Syracuse 23-11

(12) Utah St. 23-8 vs (5) Washington 24-6

(10) Seton Hall 66 vs (7) Wichita St. 86

(15) Winthrop 61 vs (2) Tennessee 63

Yet to play:
(11) San Diego St. 24-8 vs (6) Indiana 18-11

(13) Air Force 24-6 vs (4) Illinois 25-6

(16) Southern 19-12 vs (1) Duke 30-3

(12) Texas A&M 21-8 vs (5) Syracuse 23-11

(12) Utah St. 23-8 vs (5) Washington 24-6

My Commentary:
-I have to say that for whatever reason, I was surprised at both Seton Hall and Oklahoma's early exits-particularly Oklahoma. Granted, as a strong Arizona Wildcats fan, I should feel nothing but joy for the team that has at times stood in Arizona's way as it climbed the latter but Oklahoma usually has a good time. If you see the breakdown of the score for the second half, they clawed their way back but time ran out and Wis-Milwaukee got the better of them.

-Winthrop's loss to Tennessee ended a potential all "W" sweep.

-BC...I admit a certain bias to the one team that is representing Massachusetts in Division I. I miss Holy Cross, who actually has a championship (from way back-a member of that team was Bob Cousy, former Boston Celtic from the "black and white" movie reel days) but I do believe that BC's move into the ACC has help them get to the next level as it were.
It did not look good at the end of regulation on the first OT. I swore as I had in 1999, when Russian figure skater Maria Butyrskaya had been given 4 minutes she would never see again, that if BC wanked this opportunity and badly that I was going to fly to the arena and kick some rears all the way home.
Apparently they heard me. They may not win the Tournament. There is a lot of talent out there. The money is on UConn this year again with some change being placed Duke, Syracuse and Villanova.

And it would be painful to see Arizona have to go against them. As it is, I have to deal with the fact that Arizona will have to do battle with Georgetown, who is currently being coached by the son of the coach that won the only NCAA title in their history. I grew up as a fan of the "John Thompson-Patrick Ewing" then just the "John Thompson" Hoyas. I hoped they would rise again after Thompson's exit as head coach. It seems that they have. Now I again must watch my children do battle. I will also have to watch the winner of that fight eventually meet up with BC should they stay in the game.

"Sigh"

March 17 will feature some interesting matchups suitable for a beer drinking day.
-Arizona and Wisconsin. Arizona has been feeling around this year. Wisconsin has been respectable. Both teams traditionally have a good first round. It will be all about great shot selection, controlling the boards, hitting the free throws and outlasting.

Must go now and prepare for tonight's games.

Teri Hatcher

I am always pleased when someone famous can share their past in order to help other that may suffer similarly. I am no huge fan of Teri Hatcher. I do respect that she decided to share that she had been abused and share that sometimes you have to do the thing that you don't want to do to save others.

The story is here.

The Five Factor Values Test

The Apprentice-Season 5

I admit it. I want Donald Trump's show "The Apprentice."

I have watched it since its inception though with varying degrees of faithfulness. I do play the fantasy game-I who skewered male friends and coworkers for playing baseball and football fantasy games as if they mattered.

Yes. Me.

This season promises to be interesting since Donald "handpicked" this batch of contestants.

Other blogs such as The Apprentice Blog, can definitely provide better analysis than I ever could, especially since I don't have that type of time.

I can say that the first episode was notable for at least proving that you can belong to Mensa but that does not mean that you are smart.

Other things I took away from Season 5, Episode 1:
-Put up or shut up but realize if you shut up, you may shut yourself out. (Summer should have called more restaurants or at least called Tarek to task for not having a 'hook')

-Russian mafia in da house! Not really. It was the thought that popped into my head when I saw the conclusion of the boardroom.

Lenny is the medicine that this show needs.

Someone pointed out at The Apprentice website on Yahoo that after being subjected to overly confident, pretentitious lawyers we are finally seeing someone who seems not only to have the ambition to succeed but the actual knowledge and real hutzpah to pull it off. This is the guy that should have been recruited for Season Three's "Street Smarts vs. Book Smarts."

He clearly read how the boardroom was going to go. He gave Summer sound advice to keep her head and keep quiet, which she followed until the last moment. He is not a person to waste words and sees things clearly. He thinks on his feet and every move is decisive.

Granted we have only see him on one task. He may well be too much of a "killer," which is what did in his Russian predecessor from Season 4, Alla. She had all the same qualities as Lenny and there is no doubt that had she not made the tactical error of beating the dead horse (the dead horse being ineffectual Felicia who was headed out the door anyway), she would have made it into the Final Three.

And honestly, for the same reason that I chose Summer as the one to be fired this week, I will say that Lenny will not be the apprenctice. I chose Summer because I could not envision someone named 'Summer' as working for Donald Trump, that would be making deals with real sharks. I think that poor Lenny's very heavy Russian accent will work against him. Just as I listened to the boardroom and hear his "not for long" comment in response to Tarek's future in the game and said, "Russian mafia in da house," I am sure that potential partners to Trump corp might shy away from someone who sounds like they are plotting to take care of Mr. Bond.
I might be wrong. There is a sizable Russian immigrant population in New York City and Lenny may be the norm. I don't live there. I would like to see him make the Final Two.

I also play the Fantasy Game on Yahoo as well. My addiction knows no bounds.
